Like a Boss*!

*Like a Boss

Apparently it is Boss's Day today... who knew!?

Either way I have never been wished, acknowledged or gifted on this day before. In fact most of my previous flunkies and minions (Read: Developers) have been decidedly insubordinate!

And I haven't really had a proper admin person/assistant before. I've usually done all my own admin and minutes and filing and and and...

But now I have an amazing PSA (Project Support Assistant) who has made my life and job so much more efficient and effective and slick. She is so good and on the ball and she inspires me too. She has really whipped me into shape. So now I get my work done chop-chop and all my reports are always sent out on time. I call her the 'head-girl'. She is awesome!

Look what she gave ME today!

Isn't that just awesome?!? Thanks Di I love you!

P.S. She is the one who came up with and organised the Hot-Stepper challenge too.

New Hair... on day 4

I've had the new hair for a few days now and after the Gun Run on Sunday and then a very intense and sweaty (and AWESOME!) kata-box class last night I had to wash it... Bye bye sleek and straight - hello bird's nest!

So this is what it looks like today.

(Yes, the photo was taken in the loo at work)

Hrm, I still need to get used to it, I am not sure it really is an improvement.

GUN RUN 2012 - Results

The Gun Run Results are published already. Wow they are fast! Not 100% accurate as they have me listed as finishing at 49:00, when the clock said 48:52 (and my 2x personal timing devices had 48:48), but anyway close enough!

So as usual here are my stats:

So not quite a 'mensian' when measured against men, but right up there in the woman's race. :)

Oh and the 65 year old woman who stayed in front of me and who I could not catch, actually WON the 60-70 category. She finished 8 seconds before me.

Also I have noticed I am still running with a distinct heel-strike action. When I train I have been trying to focus on a toe strike, but it seems I forget this completely when I race!

'Week-End' Away for A's 50th

So while we were stomping at RTD, A was back in Cape Town (working as usual) and turning 50! Yeah so it's official Rocking the Daisies comes before anything else on my calendar... Look I did invite him along, but he had more civilized plans with some other friends and stuff. So BITE ME ok!?

Anyhow, so after rushing back - no actually crawling at a snails pace which took 3-freaking-hours because of the queues and traffic - on Sunday afternoon I packed in a whirl and didn't even have a chance to shower or even change...
(So yes I still looked like THIS!)
Before A arrived, with the most divine and decadent chocolate cake which we shared and then the boys and I showered him with gifts of personalised wine, whiskey, photo-books, homemade cookies and bath-salts etc. Then we packed up and zooted off on a surprise 'pseudo week-end' journey to a mystery location.

He had no idea where we were going, but I did tell him it was driving distance and that we could take bicycles... we went to Vindoux in Tulbagh.

Vindoux were amazing. I had originally bought a voucher for a one night stay. But as the planning for this trip evolved I ended up expanding  this to 2 nights and included a spa couple's treatment and turn down service. As it turned out the luxury tree-houses were fully booked on the dates I needed so they very generously and graciously gave us the Luxury Tree Lodge at the same price and wow it was fabulous with the most magnificent view from the deck over fruit trees and the mountains. Idyllic.

When we arrived we had complimentary sherry, a bottle of wine and cute home-made decorated cookies laid out for us. The bedroom and bathroom were beautifully decorated as part of the 'turn-down' and there was a  bottle of sparkling wine and some divine 'Belgian' chocolates from Moniki Chocolatiers. Seriously decadently delicious!

After we'd settled in we took an evening sun-downer stroll through the vineyards and orchards. Then we got washed up and dressed for dinner and headed into town. Tulbagh is a bit of a sleepy town so it was pretty slim pickings but the hotel restaurant The Olive Terrace was open and it was very nice. A had brought along a bottle of  Moët . YUM! So my relatively plebeian bottle stayed in the fridge! We had a pleasant dinner with some poignant conversation.

Next morning we were served a delicious and generous breakfast in our lodge. It also arrived with birthday cupcakes for the birthday boy (Thanks Vindoux!). After the hearty breakfast I took myself for a 10km run and then we washed up and went to the spa for a simply blissful 1.5 hour massage. It was amazing. Once we were done with the we got kitted up and decided to go cycling to Waverley Hills organic wine farm. Based on the map this looked like 10-12kms away... well let's just say the map was NOT TO SCALE! We ended up trekking along a busy road, which is a main bypass with major road works, strong winds, and big hills. In the end it was 27 km away! And the steep gravel driveway up to the cellars nearly killed me. As we arrived and stumbled through the door they looked at their watches and indicated they were closing soon. Nooo!

After explaining how we'd trekked and missioned to get there she decided we could do a tasting after all. So we tasted (no, let's be frank DRANK) about 10 wines and ate olives and tapenades and wine jelly and crackers. Bought as much as we could carry and then went on our merry-wobbly way.

The journey back was a lot easier. Probably a combination of the alcohol numbing the pain, a tail wind and more down than up hills... Once back we bathed and dressed and went out for dinner again. This time with the cheaper bubbles. We went to Readers Restaurant which was a strange but charming place. The owner a large friendly lady who is also the chef - and was also entertaining her own guests at a big table and serving them herself and eating with them - has a complete cat obsession. There are cats and all things cat everywhere. The food though is like hearty and love-filled home cooking. It like a special meal you'd make a loved one, rather than routine restaurant food. It  was very yummy. I had a chicken breast stuffed with spinach, feta and dark chocolate! It was a perfect tummy filling meal after our cycling work-out. After dinner we walked up and down the long road out front while finishing the bubbles and before heading back for a good sleep.

The second morning came too soon, but brought with it another big breakfast of muesli, fruit, yoghurt  cheeses, cold meats, croissants and jams. We ate our fill and then packed up and bid the lovely Vindoux goodbye and drove into Tulbagh to pay Moniki a quick visit to get some more of those yummy hand made chocolates! Then we headed through to Ceres, where we parked the car and then hoped on our bikes and cycled off to Prince Alfred Hamlet, only to find it wasn't what I thought it was - I confused it with Prince Albert! D'oh. There was pretty much nothing to see of do there... So we headed back to Ceres for lunch and then cruised back to Cape Town in a rain storm. It was a really nice and relaxed couple of days and nice to chat uninterrupted by kids etc. and to see A relax, and stop working for more than a few hours.

At Waverley Hills after that looong cycle and drinking all that wine!

Relationships - are they all finite?

It saddens me so much when I see what appear to be strong and good relationships straining and breaking.

Recently I have heard of 5 break-ups. 2 long term marriages and 3 serious relationships on the cusp of long-term commitment (moving in, marriages and babies). All of these have come as a gut-punch shock to me.

Something inside me breaks and a little more of my hope dies each time I hear this kind of news.

Part of me really wants to believe that happy ever after story. But I am slowly but surely losing faith in the construct of long-term successful co-habiting relationship.

Do you think it is possible to have a truly GOOD and SUSTAINABLE and HAPPY long term relationship?

Gun Run 2012

So after getting 50 mins on the dot at the Woman's Day 10km race I have been trying to break that 50 mins barrier. I was hoping that all that running I did during that recent Hot-stepper's Challenge would help me achieve it. I have been training like a Mo-Fo!

I entered the Gun Run, which was one of my first ever races back in 2006. I haven;t done it for a few years though because it clashes with Rocking the Daisies and/or the Meiringspoort Half Marathon. But this year it didn't so I entered.

I thought I was well on track to have a good run but then yesterday it seemed like everything was conspiring against me. It looked like it was going to be shitty weather. SUPER windy and possibly rain. I felt tired and lethargic and PMSy. My legs were so stiff and sore crouching down hurt. I just wasn't feeling it. I knew I'd go and do the race no matter what, but I wasn't expecting any major result.

When the alarm went off this morning I sort of wanted to just go to sleep actually. But up I got up and off we went and suddenly things just fell into place. I got a good parking, managed to find an open loo for a last minute pre-race pee, got a spot right up front at the start and the weather was PERFECT. Warm, still and stunning.

I had a slight equipment fumble as I started trying to turn on my iPOD, heart Rate monitor AND Nike Plus receiver but was quickly sorted and off I went.

It was a lovely run and it went really really well. I didn't feel like I was running that fast but I felt good and so I just kept going. It was a relatively easy run. As I got to the end I searched for the clock and when I saw it I could not believe that it was still on 48 mins! I crossed the line at 48:50. Which pretty much hit my goal of a sub-50 out the park!

I was so chuffed! I did a little dance... ;)

After I was done I ran back to find Griff, and found Quinn too, who'd slept over at a friend and was there too. I ran to the car and then back to the end and then back to find them because they still weren't finished and then had to go back to the car again. I did about 20km in total!

Finally got my hair done...

Many have seen this on FB already...
It has been nearly a year since I went to have my hair done (as per pic in my siggie) - I KNOW I am a terrible representation of the female species. Anyway I finally went... actually to be honest I cancelled the appointment about 3 previous times, to go running or something more important like that. LOL

Anyway so since yesterday was an official 'rest-day' in prep for trying to get a personal best at the Gun Run today, I FINALLY actually went.

I told the heair dresser should could do whatever she wanted to...

She took loads of hair off and went to town with the bleach and the GHD'ed my hair too - I have never had that before... and well...

Ta da!

I just hope that I can make it look half ok when I wash it and it goes curly again!!

RTD 2012

This past week-end was ROCKING THE DAISIES!! Rocking the Daisies 2012 was our 7th in a row, yes sir we have been to every single one of them!
Chillaxing with feet up and beer after missioning there and setting up camp.
Awesome new bands I saw this year include: December Streets, Iso(chronous), Kongos, Desmond and the Tutus and Shadow Club. I hadn't seen any of these before and they were really really good. (In the order listed - descending.  I also saw Arno Crastens again, and he was good. But I always somehow feel he is over-hyped and is not as good as HE thinks he is. Blok Party where the headline act on Saturday night and honestly I was under-awed. The main stage was crowed and people were getting a bit grumpy and I was tired and a bit done, so half-way through their set I called it a night and went to bed.

Other awesome things from RTD this year. Some great Comedy sets. Bingo. For reals. I walked into the Lemon Tree Threatre on Saturday night to find the boys and the pace was PACKED with otherwise young, hot and hip people looking and acting like pensioners and fully absorbed and enthralled with their game of Bingo. It was hillare! I made a few 'Wtf?' type comments in passing and they claimed it to be great fun. Admittedly it did seem rather comedic, risque and off-the-wall. Alrighty then!

There was also the Schnit movie theatre, awesome food village, some fun and quirky shopping, the ever popular beach bar, electro tent (with Goldfish), and the camping area also had food, coffee, red bulls and all sorts of wonderment and merriment.

As always. I LOVED it. Here are some photos of the fun and games for RTD 2012!

Yup, Roxy 'the Puppy' was there again and got loads of love and attention as always.
And yes she loved it as always despite a few rude comments from a couple of drunk assholes.
